Pre-Camp Fellowship 2023

Clan of the Black Bear, Greetings!

We hope this finds all of you well and gearing up for a great summer!

One week from today, we will gather for our annual Pre-Camp Fellowship at Rainey Mountain. This event is one of our most important as we prepare Rainey Mountain to receive and welcome our fellow Scouts and Scouters from around the nation as they choose our home to enjoy their summer camp experience.

Thousands of participants are planning to come to our home to grow and live the life of Scouting for a week in the setting of the beautiful southern Blue Ridge Mountains. Why? For most, the reputation of the summer camp program at Rainey Mountain continues to spread as an amazing Scouting experience. That reputation has been hard earned and is well deserved. The Camp administration and staff continue to be some of the best representatives and examples of servant leadership as they focus on customer service to all of our in-council Scouts and Scouters as well as many that visit here from around the region and country.

The reputation of our summer camp is due in large part to the programming and customer focus of those working there. It is also due in large part to the service and leadership you provide as we prepare Rainey Mountain for our guests’ arrival. Our events and programming have traditionally occurred outside of the summer camp program. That service is recognized well beyond our council borders by other Order of the Arrow Lodges and camp leaders as Mowogo Lodge continues to set a very high standard in cheerful service to our council properties. This is a central theme of the Order and part of how we promote Scout camping.

Over the past few years Mowogo Lodge has been working with the camp administration to develop the “Summer Chief” program as a part of the overall summer camp programming. Included in this has been the traditional service of opening our museum and trading post for all summer camp participants to enjoy and be inspired by. Last summer, members of the Camp Staff also began to perform Ordeal elections and Call-out ceremonies for both in and out of council units that wish to participate on the day the Order of the Arrow is celebrated during each week of camp. Our own Vice Chief of Administration, Caroline D., has taken on the task of preparing and refurbishing a display for summer camp that will be found in the dining hall that will highlight programming, achievements, and service Mowogo is so well known for.

These are reasons why our Pre-Camp Fellowship is so important. The service and work we will perform next weekend set the stage for a great summer camp. No task is too menial. Each service project and task have a purpose for making Rainey Mountain, our home, the best it can possibly be so that all of our guests will be able to see by the shape of our camp how we love our camp and maintain this amazing place that continues to inspire all who enjoy camping there.

As a personal request from your Lodge Adviser, I would ask you to help us complete one major task. It is something that all of us can do and it does not require any organization or specialized tools. The 11th point of the Scout Law is a “A Scout is Clean.” There are many ways a Scout should try to achieve this point. But at Pre-Camp, I would like to ask that all of us focus throughout the weekend on keeping our camp clean. I have been able to visit Rainey Mountain over the past few weeks. There seems to be an accumulation of litter and trash around camp and in some of our creeks. There will be a crew assignment that will be focused on this guided by our Service Chair, Patrick M., and Dr. Ed Brown, our Lodge Service Adviser and Council Vice President for Properties. However, it doesn’t take much effort to pick up a piece of trash and dispose of it properly rather than walking by and thinking someone else will get that.

Mowogo Lodge has always been known for our service to our camps. It is an expression of love to care and maintain our properties. It is in part how we express the Scout Law of being clean and our concern for others. Thank you for doing your part to help us communicate our love for our camps. The many guests and visitors to Rainey Mountain may not see you performing your service, but, if you think about it, isn’t that a simple yet pure form of servant leadership? To give of yourself without seeking recognition is a keystone of our Order and of Scouting. And we demonstrate that as a part of how live daily based in the principles and values we share.

Thank you for all you have done, continue to do, and what you will do to serve others! Rest assured; it is noticed and appreciated!

We look forward to seeing you next weekend at Rainey Mountain!

2023 for Mowogo Lodge Begins! Spring Fellowship, Here We Come!

Greetings, Fellow Wearers of the Arrow!

We hope this finds you well and getting excited about Spring Fellowship! This coming weekend we will once again perform the most important task we as an Order of the Arrow Lodge has: conduct the most meaningful Ordeal experience possible for Ordeal Candidates sent to us from around the Northeast Georgia Council. Traditionally, Spring Fellowship signifies a new year for Mowogo Lodge. This will be the first event conducted by our 2023 Lodge Leadership and they have all worked very hard to make this event something great for you and for you to be very proud of!

The Ordeal is the most important task we have. It is the Ordeal experience that communicates several things we need to remember and reflect on. It is the Ordeal experience that communicates our shared values of self-sacrifice, self-reliance, self-reflection, and unselfish service to others. It is the Ordeal experience that reminds of why we share these values. It is the experience that will determine the future of Mowogo Lodge as well as, and perhaps more importantly, how much the Order of the Arrow can be an integral part of the Scouting program for all Scouts and Scouters in the Northeast Georgia Council. Putting on the best Ordeal experience will serve to create purpose and meaning in our newest members that will in turn return to their units and, if we have our job correctly, understand the deeper meaning of helping others along their Scouting trail and journey. I know working through the Ordeal program, I am reminded of and reflect upon not just my time in the Order of the Arrow but also as Scout and Scouter. I highly recommend getting acquainted with the Ordeal if it has been a while for you.

The Ordeal experience is one to be respected and supported. It is easy to get busy working service projects. It is to get focused on ensuring that each part of the program for the weekend goes off well. It is easy and enjoyable to share fellowship with each other as we gather once again. But please understand that your every action and behavior set an example for our Ordeal Candidates. Words are important, but actions speak so much louder. If we behave in a way that doesn’t respect the experience of each Ordeal Candidate, it is difficult for them to respect the experience. If we share our respect for the Ordeal experience, the experience each of us had as an Ordeal Candidate, then we will be more likely to accomplish our goal of creating deeper meaning in the experience that can be carried to all of our units and districts in our council.

Our Lodge Executive Committee has worked very hard to prepare for Spring Fellowship and I have seen their dedication to create this one time only Ordeal experience for our candidates. They have also worked very hard to prepare for you to come and share fellowship in service. They understand and respect the traditions and meaning of Mowogo Lodge and the Order of the Arrow. They know the impact you and they can have on all of us that will gather and serve this weekend. It is an honor to serve with them, and with all of you.

As always, please bring with you your BSA Medical form with parts A & B completed to submit when you register and check in. If you are required to have Youth Protection Training, please make sure that you complete this prior to coming to the event! Those that have their YPT expiring prior to this weekend have been notified to make sure this is completed. And be ready to carry on the tradition of service, fellowship, and respect for the honor of the Ordeal and all of our Ordeal candidates that come to us from many other Scouts and Scouters we have and may never meet. It is time for you to shine yet again as the Honor Society of the Northeast Georgia Council. Let’s set an example that we and our council can be proud of. And lets recognize all of our Ordeal Candidates for the experience we believe can have a profound impact for years to come.

Thank you for all you do to bring Scouting to life and for making the Order of the Arrow even better!

We look forward to seeing all of you this weekend!

Max Sartain

Brothers and Sisters, we hope this finds you well.

It is with heavy hearts that we reach out to you today. Mowogo Lodge and the Northeast Georgia Council has lost a loving and guiding light. Brother Max Sartain passed this past Friday at his home. For those of you that attended our Pow Wow event this past September, we honored Max and his family during lunch for the time, service, and gifts that Max and they have blessed Rainey Mountain, our lodge, and our council with for so many years.

Max shared his gift as a Mason to enhance and improve our council properties. His legacy can be seen at Rainey Mountain in various places that bare his name and at countless other places at all of our council properties that don’t. He served in many positions as a Scouter including as Chapter Adviser for Ani-Gatogewi for numerous years. His sons participated in Scouting and the Order of the Arrow serving in positions of leadership. His son Greg served as our Lodge Chief in 1983. Max’s service to Scouting was long because he and his wife, Miss Betty, believed in the potential and possibility that Scouting could change and impact lives that improved and still improves our world. We are forever grateful for their service and commitment to Scouting and Mowogo Lodge.

A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, February 7, from 6:00 to 8:00PM at the Pruitt Funeral Home in Royston, Georgia (47 Franklin Springs Road). The service for Max will be held Wednesday, February 8, at 2:00pm at the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church in Danielsville, Georgia (5601 Highway 29). If you are able to attend the service for Max Sartain and are so moved, please wear your complete Scouting uniform with your Order of the Arrow sash to show respect for Max’s service to and for our program.

This has been a difficult year for the Sartain family as Max’s son, Chris, passed this past summer. Please keep Miss Betty, Greg, and all of the Sartain family in your thoughts and prayers and lift them up as they navigate this difficult time.
